we are small to mid-sized company, and need to upgrade infrastructure. With today's virtualization technology, is it good to put sql servers in virtual environment? what measurements are needed to be taken into considerations? thanks.

Huge topic.
I polled a room of data professionals this week while speaking at a paid event, 56 people. All of them are using virtualization in one capacity or another. So yes, it is good to put SQL Servers in a virtual environment. Further, a lot people are now paying for virtualization through cloud services, either AWS or Azure.
Yes, it's not just safe, but a good idea to use virtualization with SQL Server.
Now, advice on what you need to measure? I don't know what your desire is for moving to virtualization. Are you trying to consolidate hardware so you use less? Are you trying to take advantage of virtualization's abilities to build servers quickly on the fly? There's just so much to talk about here that it's really hard to narrow down to a set of advice.
What is your goal for virtualization?

I'd say a key point in making the determination of using virtualization is the knowledge the IT department already has about virtualization. While it's easy to setup new virtual servers once the host infrastructure and software is setup initially, it's a more difficult task to ensure that a new virtual server for use with SQL Server is setup and configured properly.

i would suggest to make sure to have the following measures applied before embarking to real database migration;
Use Updated Versions. First, keeping your hardware, hypervisors, and software updated is more important than you might think. ...
Manage Capacity
Perform Virtual Inventory.
Use Virtualization Management and SQL Server Virtualization Monitoring Software
This would ease

Ok... since you brought it up, what do YOU mean by "Manage Capacity"?
