Hi to all. I am currently virtualising the IT infrastructure (ESXI 5, EVA SAN). The existing physical SQL server has 2 quad core processors, 8GB RAM + a 12GB page file. I would like some advice from those that have virtualised in the past regards resource allocation for the SQL VM. Now I appreciate every case is different, I am looking for a general guide. SQL currently runs a single application. Performance monitoring show the physical box is barely being tickled.
SAN - 4 shelves - 32 * 300GB 15K Fibre Channel Hard Disks (data striped across all discs in the shelves).
The disks are being presented as follows:
Disk 1 - RAID 5 (Path B) - OS
Disk 2 - RAID 5 (Path B) - Data Files
Disk 3 - RAID 1 (Path A) - Log Files
Disk 4 - RAID 5 (Path B) - TempDB
So on with the questions.
CPU
1) Number of virtual Sockets - How many should be presented?
2) Number of cores per socket - How many should be presented?
Disks (windows)
1) Allocation unit size
I would appreciate any feedback, advice.
Many Thanks,
Phil.

I followed the following article: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd758814.aspx
Hope this helps others.

I hope you're aware of the following limitation of using SQL Server in a virtualized environment:
"Virtualization Snapshots for Hyper-V or for any virtualization vendor are not supported to use with SQL Server in a virtual machine." (source:support.microsoft.com)
We just decided against virtualization just because e couldn't find a "software lock" that would prevent anybody from ever using the snapshot functionality. "Rules on paper" were just not enough for us...
You might also verify that you're still licensed properly (which is almost an academic task...).
