I want to have a look inside a transaction log and want to know the best way of doing this, is there a 3rd party tool I can use (ideally free)?

Great tool. You can download a trial version, for free, and check it out. I've used it in the past to actually resolve an issue we were having. Trying to get them to by it at my new employer but I started after budgets were allocated for this year but it's on the plan for next year!
Apex also has one (I've never used it) and I'm sure there are others as well, google it.

It is worth noting that this program will only work on SQL 2000 which is a shame
