We have had various outtages on our live SQL 2005 server today. However after a reboot we are finding the SQL service is taking forever to start.
What can cause issues in starting the SQL service ? It doesn`t load anything into memory or anything like that does it ?

What do you see in the SQL logs? If this is a production server, it's probably rolling back transactions.

I agree. The server is likely trying to recover a database. Depending on what it is trying to recover from, uncommitted transactions or from corruption, and the size of the DB, there's no sure way to tell how long it will take to complete. If you can access the errorlogs, either through management tools or the file system, you might be able to tell what's going on.
