Hi all,
I just got into work and started up BIDS to find that my variables display is blank. The tab was there but now that is even gone. When it was blank, I clicked View-->Other Windows-->Variables but that took the blank tab away. Now when I click View-->Other Windows-->Variables nothing happens in the BIDS interface. The variables display is now gone and will not come back. Anyone run into problems like this before? If yes, is there a work around that doesn't involve a re-install?

I've run into this behavior on occasion. The approach I've found most consistent in recovering the display is to right click the general background for the package and select 'Variables'.

There should be an SSIS menu. Variables should be available from there.

Thanks for the feedback. I've tried that multiple times with hopes that "this time" it will show up but they do not.

Yes there is, View-->Other Windows-->Variables but that did not display them either. The whole Variables window is gone for some reason.

Hmm. Now you have me puzzled. A google search came up with the following from MSDN:
Hopefully this approach will help. Haven't ever gotten to the point where the window won't recover from the right click/variables method but it sounds like the next step may be to try the window layout refresh.

I tried to reset my window layout, then clicked view, other windows, and then variables but still the window is not showing up. So frustrating as I need to create more variables in my package. Argh! Thanks for the link though, it's too bad it didn't work for me.

if you think the variables popup might be showing up outside of the desktop space(like when you switch from dual monitor to single, and stuff is outside of scope)
a lot of times if you change your screen resolution from current to something smaller(ie 1600x1200 to 1200x768) , the OS will move alll windows into the new desktop area so you can get it to float int he touchable area again.
then you can change it back to normal again.
see if that works for you.

Thanks Lowell, I really wish I could say that finding the window via changing my resolution worked but it didn't. 🙁
It's really going to suck if I have to re-install this software. I'll be starting from scratch if that happens.

Here's another Microsoft suggestion. Don't know if you have dual monitors but, if so, perhaps this approach will help. Expand 'Detail' for the description and work-around.
Let us know if you find a solution.

Sigh, I wish I could say that that worked and it looked promising but nothing changed. I just did a system reboot too but that did nothing for me either. I am totally stumped!

I just had some IT guys look at this but they are unsure as to why it is all-out missing. Another problem is that there aren't any SSIS gurus in the company I work for because not many people use SSIS. The IT guys were talking about upgrading me to SSIS 2010 so I'm hoping that it is a little less buggy. As it stands, I'm not the only one that is confused by this.

Never heard of SSIS 2010.
