Using Sql Server email agent

  I would like to setup sql server to send email alerts if the sql agent is down or any jobs have failed. It appears that it will only work if my client's email server is MAPI compliant. If it's not then I cannot send emails via sql server alerts ?

  This is true for SQLServer 2000.  SQLServer 2005 has "database mail" which uses SMTP.
