ya i dont think i can use identity for now anyway. its not working the way i want it to and i have tried it. it was my first idea and as i thought at the time the best and easy wway to get it to work. but it doesnt do want i want it to do so i have to do it the round about way if possible

If you can explain why an identity won't work instead of just saying it doesn't maybe we can figure out how to make it work. The manual identity is not anything I want any part of. It is a total PITA and usually doesn't really work very well.

Indeed. There are far more ways to get this wrong than get it right, and even when right it often slows things down.
