Using an alias on Windows 2008 x64

  • Hey all, anyone aware of issues with setting up an alias on Windows 2008 x64? I can setup an alias just fine on a Windows 2008 x86 server as well as an x86 XP desktop. I get the general error "a network related or instance specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server" blah blah blah.

I've also just confirmed with an old colleague that in their environment, they experience the same thing. So there is definitely something we're missing about using an alias with Windows 2008 x64. I have not yet been able to find anything online about this ... still searching though.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks

  • Hey all, still haven't had any luck on this ... hoping to catch someone's attention on this.

    Thanks

  • when you refer to an alias, is this an alias on a client connecting to the 64 bit instance or an alias setup on the 64 bit box that hosts the instance? If its the latter, there are two spots to add the alias, one for native 32 clients and one for 64 bit, have you added the alias to each via configuration manager?

    Andrew

  • Ahhhh, thanks Andrew, I'm a big dummy and overlooked the 32bit config.

    Thanks!
