I'd like to suggest that the user search be enhanced to allow us to search for a user by email address. Certainly I'd expect that it would only search email's of users who have made it public (allow others to send emails via the boards).
The reason I ask for this is that I occasionally receive direct emails from members asking for help, and if I don't know them, I prefer that they not have my email address, but I still want to try to help. If I could find them on SSC I could reply via personal message and not give out my email.
I just thought that another option might be to include a link in the email to the sender's SSC profile so you could PM them.
I think the search might be easier and faster to implement, but don't know.

I'd say just include the username in the mail or a link to their profile. Link to their profile would be best. Nice easy way to reply to user without sending them mail.

I've found this to be something lacking in the site as well. Basically, you allow someone to send an email and I have no idea who it's from. I understand the want/need to make the replyto: address that of the sender for ease of direct communication, but also making sure the username or a link to the user's profile page as Jack suggests would be very helpful.
I doesn't seem like it would be too hard to implement as well since you already know the user sending it to set the replyto: address, I'd think that modifying the code to add the extra data wouldn't be terribly hard.
Thanks,
-Luke.

Something indicating who the source is would be nice.
On the other hand, it almost doesn't matter to me, since any e-mail from an address that's not in my address book ends up in my spam folder anyway. Sometimes I'll notice e-mails from this site in there, and handle them, but I certainly can't guarantee that I'll get them or notice them before auto-deletion kicks in.

Yeah I ended up having to whitelist SSC as certain things started to get treated as spam... You know like a couple thousand notifications from the Thread, the newsletter etc...

This would be a nice feature.

I turned off e-mail alerts from SSC a long time ago. I'm usually subscribed to far too many threads for that to be practical for me.

searching by email would expose emails, which could be bad.
Adding a link to their PM form would be better. I'll add that to the list.
