The biggest challenge I have with tools is licensing. The tools themselves are usually pretty cool. Figure out if I can use them... not so much.

I agree with Steve ... try new tools .. learn what they can and can not do for you.
But I bump into the old adage.

Make sure whatever third-party tools (free or otherwise) you decide to use they are blessed first by the auditors. Otherwise, you are likely to get dinged on it pretty good.

Thanks, Steve, for bringing Extended Events to my attention. Just like Grant, I have been doing 1222 and thought that was The Way.

I am currently doing a 14 Day eval of Redgate's SQL Monitor 2.3 now and I must say I am impressed with the ease of setup and config for this SQL Server monitoring tool versus say Idera DM, and the cost is much more in line as well.:-D
