I have a remote user connected to our server via VPN. Whenver he tries to create an ODBC connection to our SQL Server, he get this error:
Connection failed: SQL State: '01000' SQL Server Error: 11004 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]ConnectionOpen (Connect()). Connection Failed: SQL State: '08001' SQL Server Error: 6 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]Specified SQL server not found.
He is using the IP address when referencing the server.
Can anyone shed light on this problem?
Thanks!!

Did you try creating an alias in the client pc, from the Client Network Utility?
Specify the ip adress in the servername and in the alias the real name of the server.

Not 100% sure, but make sure your WAN administrator is allowing traffic on Port 1434 on the firewall.
