what is benefit for the end users if we upgrade sql 2000 to sql 2005.
CAn we upragde sql 2000 to sql 2008

Yes, you can upgrade directly to SQL Server 2008 & I would strongly suggest that you upgrade to SQL Server 2008 since you are still at SQL Server 2000.

For inplace upgrade to SQL 2008, your SQL 2000 must be at SP4 or above.

Performing an In Place upgrade would be tricky, it would result in not having a working instance, to fail back if the upgrade isn't hits a road block.
I would consider a side by side upgrade.
