Upgrading SQL SERVER 2005 to SQL SERVER 2008

    We have plan to upgrade our SQL SERVER 2005 to SQL SERVER 2008,Do we need to shut down the SQL SERVER ,during upgrading process?

    are you doing in place or side by side?

    The new 2008 server will need to restart in single user mode at some point, I believe, so you can't have people trying to connect (or applications).
