Upgrading server question

  • We ae upgrading our SQl 7.0 box. We want to rename the current server and copy our databases to a new box with the original name. However, the new box will have a different IP address. Will we have to reconfigure the ODBC settings on our clients

    when this process is complete?

  • If your clients connect by IP, then yes. Most clients connect using DNS/Wins/NetBIOS, so you may not need to.

  • We use DNS, so I hope we are home free.

  • Should be. The only thing that is bound to the old box is the sid, so if you had some service that relied on an ACL, you might have issues. SQL is at the application layer, so as long as the name resolves, and the login credentials are there, you are ok.
