Upgrading from SQL 2000 to 2005

  • We are running SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition (SP4) on Windows Server 2003 EE SP2. May I upgrade to SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition (32-Bit)? May I upgrade to SQL Server 2005 EE (64-Bit)? (Just curious if I am able to upgrade to either.)

In order to upgrade to SQL Server 2005, after I plug in the SQL Server 2005 CD would the setup program ask if I want to Upgrade to SQL Server 2005?

    Thanks, Kevin

  • Hi Kevin,

Microsoft lists the supported upgrade paths here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143393(SQL.90).aspx

You don't want to just drop in the disc and hope for the best. MS gives a good summary in the SQL Server 2005 Upgrade Handbook here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc966519.aspx#EGAA

I personally have always preferred a clean install and migration over an upgrade.
