We finally got the media for 2k5 Ent and I'd like to get our eval server upgraded asap as I'm sure we're getting near the end of the eval period,* and we're about to go into production.
My understanding was that I'm supposed to go through the installation and do an upgrade. However, as I stepped through, I got asked all the normal questions of a fresh installation, like collation, etc. It did recognize my default instance, it did give me the option to upgrade, etc. But this last step indicates it's going to start copying program files, and I'm very wary of that.
Am I on the right path to upgrade from Eval to Ent? Should I press Install, Back, or Cancel?
..jeremy.
* Near the end of period, yeah. Have you noticed you can't tell when the eval will expire? I had to reinstall a couple times over a few weeks in the beginning to get things right, so looking at the directory dates doesn't cut it. Oh, and Microsoft Support was clueless. Heh. You can imagine how short my fingernails have been as I beg my boss to get that license now!

Hello Jeremy,
Yes you are on the right path.
Make sure that you are not upgrading a named instance, because if you upgrade the named instance and you have the name as "SQLEval", the upgradation will be done without any problems but the name of the named instance remains the same and users connecting to it will be confused whether they are working on Enterprise or Evaluation edition. So, it would be better to have backups of databases on the Evaluation edition, install a fresh server and then restore the backups.
All the best for your upgradation process and let the forum know the steps you took.
Thanks
Lucky
