Upgrading a SQL Server 2005 cluster to SQL Server 2008

  • Today I am planning to upgrade a 2 node SQL Server 2005 cluster (running on Windows Server 2003 SP2) to SQL Server 2008.

As far as I can work out I just upgrade the passive node 1st and then failover before upgrading the other node.

    BUT:

    Has anyone done this before?

Is anyone aware of any potential banana skins?

Should I leave the dbs online whilst upgrading?

Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated!

    Thanks

    Richard.

  • Test this out first, have full backups handy and also make sure you run upgrade advisor before you do the upgrade.

    Thanks...

  • We did something like that and yes it works.

The problem was that we were successful.

Let me strongly advise you before you start to make an exact full copy of the SQL Server directory.

We made the mistake of updating an Exchange server version. The version updates the SQL engine. A Microsoft support call and a lost weekend later....

It is difficult to restore the Master if anything changes on the SQL Server version. So as a pure precaution measure, I would recommend making a full directory backup.
