We expect to upgrade sql this year, from 2005 to 2012. We already have monitoring tools from Quest but our parent company is asking us to install BMC Patrol for sql server. I've been googling BMC Patrol for an hour and getting the impression the latest version may be from 2009. Any experience with Patrol on new versions of sql and Server 2008 R2 64- bit?

From what I gather it is more geared to the OS rather than SQL server. If you need to have purchased software to monitor, I prefer to stick with the tried and true products out there that are designed specifically for SQL Server.

I was given a document outlining the installation of the BMC Patrol for sql server 4.3.2 agent ( 2009 ), which is to be installed on the monitored servers. But I need to know that it is cluster aware, ready for sql 2012 etc.
I think I'm going to argue that Quest Spotlight already does all of this for us and has for years, including regular updates to the product. Any outage will result in an email to the entire DBA and Systems teams ( from spotlight), so I'm not sure why we need to add more overhead to the system, monitoring it with another product.

I think that is a good plan.
