We are planning to upgrade our SQL server environment to 2017.
So which will the best OS 2012 vs 2016?
What are the advantages and new features that SQL 2017 will be benefited on running on 2016 Windows Server OS.
Mostly these SQL servers for MSBI and Sharepoint.

There's no reason to run SQL Server on an old operating system. You should use SQL Server 2016. I don't know what the individual benefits are, but I do know that you won't be worrying about it going out of support in the near future.

You can certainly install onto Windows 2012, will this be a stand alone install or cluster based?

Then windows 2016 leverages huge advances in the Windows Server Failover Cluster subsystem.
it makes absolute sense to deploy on Windows 2016

If I'm not wrong, Why can't you try to use Linux ? But surely not for Prod, just for testing on Dev / Test servers. We haven't got the right opportunity to do as this.

Might be that the OP needs SSRS, SSIS and SSAS. None of those are (at the time of me posting) supported by SQL Server on Linux, as well as several other functions. Release notes for SQL Server 2017 on Linux: Unsupported features & services

still very much virgin territory, if you want full featured then traditional is the way to go
