Is it possible to upgrade SQL 2005 Workgroup to SQL 2005 Standard?
Thanks

I can't say that I ever tried it but I'm pretty sure that it's possible. I've done a couple of upgrades from Standard to Enterprise and pretty straight forward. I expect for workgroup it would be the same.

My experience upgrading from SQL 2005 Standard Edition to Enterprise Edition hasn't been easy. BOL includes instructions which basically details poping in the Enterprise DVD/CD and doing an upgrade unfortunately this doesn't work as advertised. You see once you apply SQL 2005 SP2 to the Standard Edition the upgrade errors out with message that the installed components are newer. Interestly enough I've completed dozens of upgrade from SQL 2000 Standard to Enterprise on service packs 1 through 4 without issue. I opened a case with Microsoft on this issue as it simple to reproduce and requested the issue be logged as a bug.
My guess is that an upgrade from Workgroup to Standard would be just as problematic.
The workaround is to deattach your databases, uninstall Standard, install Enterprise and re-attach your databases.

What a pain it must be ... it sounds as if MS needs to improve a bit more in the installation/upgrade area since they have taken steps backward ...
