What I'd really like to find is a white paper for my specific scenario. I did find an article for doing this from SQL 2000 to sql 2005 64 bit. Off the top of my head, here is a rough checklist. Our sysadmin folks would handle cluster administration tasks.
1. Back up all databases
2. Script out all jobs, users, linked servers, user stored procedures, user-defined functions etc
3. Detach db's
4. Delete sql from cluster boxes, upgrade to Windows server 2008 64 bit,
5. Cluster configuration?
6. Install sql 2005 64 bit
7. Attach dbs
8. Script back in users, procs, jobs, user defined functions, etc

Inplace upgrade?
That always scares me.
It looks generally right. I'd copy the DBs off to another place as well, but I'm just paranoid..

All databases/backups are either on the Netapp disk device or on Commvault storage. There is no sql data on the two sql cluster nodes that will get upgraded.

Maybe it is my paranoid nature to data protection, but I still like to have 2 copies in this situation, but mileage and comfort levels vary by the individual.
