Upgrade path from SQL 2000

  • Hello,

Currently we are thinking to migrate directly to SQL 2008. I searched for some information about upgrade process but found out only two things:

    1. Upgrade from SQL 2000 to SQL 2008 is supported

    2. Side-by-side migration is not possible based on information from http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143694(SQL.100).aspx and migration process which requires SSIS for Database Copy.

I doubt really that MS will not provide a way to set up Instance of SQL 2008 on the same cluster as SQL 2000 and upgrade like to SQL 2005.

Can you comments those findings and correct me if I'm wrong. Any links and usefull information how to upgrade welcomed.

  • Posted a couple questions at MS. Are you keeping Windows the same? Is it 2003 or 2008?

  • We will keep OS on the same level: Windows 2003 SP2.

  • I heard that in 2008 there will be rolling upgrades, meaning you patch the inactive node, failover, patch/upgrade the formerly active/now inactive node.

W2K8 is much different, but the rolling upgrade sounds interesting. worse case you have one node down if the failover doesn't work and you have to restore/rebuild it.
