Upgrade from Sql 2003 to Sql 2008

    Hi,

    We are planning to upgrade from Sql 2003 to Sql 2008 and I would like to know what needs to be prepared and how to do as I will doing very first time.

    We have sql 2003 - on windows 2003 server with 4 CPU and 4 GB Memory.

    We have almost 12 Databases and biggest DB is around 250 GB which is also feed by Replication DB as subscriber and Publisher resides on 3rd party.

    1) What should be the new hardware and server we should configure?

    2) What other things we need to consider?

    3) What's the proper steps to migrate/upgrade DB?

    There's no such thing as SQL 2003. Are you upgrading from SQL Server 2000 or SQL Server 2005?

    Sorry Shaw, Its windows 2003 but sql server 2005 and upgrading to 2008 R2.

    One more correction:

    we have sql server 2005 - 9.00.4060.00 (intel x86) windows standard edition on windows NT 5.2 (build 3790: service pack 2).

    I will be also running Sql 2008 Upgrade Advisor.

    We are migrating from Sql 2005 standard edition to Sql 2008 R2 enterprise edition.

    From your experience, if you have any better tips, appreciate it.

    Is it virtualization is good or stand alone server hardware is good?

    Is it 8 core/CPU is enough?

    Virtualisation's fine, stand alone hardware's fine, depending on what you're doing

    Is it 8 core/CPU is enough?

    No way to answer that, to identify the CPU required would require careful benchmarking of the current server, an extrapolation of growth patterns and a decision based on that data.

    We have one Replication DB which is big - 250 GB and others are smaller DB.

    Replication runs every few minutes and few batch jobs we are running during day time and off hours.

    We have around 12 -15 DBs.

    We are running monthly reports and that time we are having some of the long wait and blocking issue.

    Do you have any suggestion which might help to decide how many processor could benefit?

    For Virtualization, i am little worried as it will be performance issue?

    From your experience, any criteria or standard we should take in consideration to go with either Virtualization or Stand alone?

    Benchmark the servers, see what they currently use, plan future growth, that gives you somewhere to start with processor need

    For Virtualization, i am little worried as it will be performance issue?

    And you've tested and confirmed there's a noticable, measurable performance degradation from virtualisation?

    I haven't tested but just from the various articles, it's conflicting that some of the people having concern about performance, as I know that scalability, restoring purpose it's very good.

    I am not much expert so taking expert people's ideas and tips as they come up with many issues and you always learn from who has practically done.

    Could you please guide me that how we can migrate replicated DB on another server as we are subscriber and we don't have access on publisher which host by 3rd party.

    Our Replication DB is big and we are planning to mive from Sql 2005 to Sql server 2008R2 on new windows server 2008R2.
