I am upgrading my local machine after a successful upgrade of our production server and multiple tests on virtual servers but keep running into this message 'The service did not respond tot he start or control request in a timely fashion.' After first encountering this problem i hit 'Cancel' and got an error that included an option to send the message to Microsoft.
I uninstalled an instance of SQL Server Express and a couple of other instances and reran it only to encounter the error again.
When I hit cancel this time it didn't stop the upgrade. It has continued with the Windows Installer actions.
I'm running Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition and have no issues from the upgrade advisor. I've attached screenshots of a couple steps in the wizard in the hopes this will help.
Any ideas on why this is happening? Should I uninstall again and try to get it to upgrade without encountering this error?

Update:
I've attached a screen shot of the next 'failure'. I hit OK and the installer continued to run. you can see on the panel behind the popup what step it was on when it failed. It is now Installing ssms and running 'sql_tools_Cpu32_Action'.
Is there any chance that I will have a solid working copy on my local machine after this?

So eventually it failed and when i shut it down and read the report it says to run:
"setup /q /action=uninstall /instanceid=MSSQLSERVER /features=SQLEngine,Replication,FullText"
Does anyone happen to know what directory this has to be run in for it to work?
Thanks
NOTE: I am using the Add Remove Programs to uninstall the instance. i attempted a repair but didn't see the Database Engine in the to be repaired list (prolly cause it never got installed) so i bailed on that. Next I will do the command line uninstall if I can remember what directory to run it in 🙂

Ugh! All day I'm at this. I did a fresh install but wasn't able to bring my 2000 dbs over to it so i uninstalled. At least this got rid of the instance from add/remove list. I attemted another upgrade but it again failed. Here are the fatal exception errors that appeared at the end. They came up one after the other :
EventType : sql100exception P1 : sql2008@rtm@ P2 : unknown
P3 : 0xb4a84aa1 P4 : 0x0a2fbd17@1211@1 P5 : 0x5d9a8c61
P6 : agentconfigaction_upgrade_validation_cpu32 P7 : unknown
P8 : 0xe62fa288 P9 : 0xe62fa288 P10 : 0x0b868f72
EventType : sql100msi P1 : 10.0.1600.22 P2 : 10.0.1600.22
P3 : sql_engine_core_inst.msi P4 : 0x018b3ff7 P5 : 0x27e009ac
P6 : install_sql_engine_core_inst_cpu32_action
Is anyone able to offer any advice on how I can go about getting 2008 Enterprise on my local? I actually don't even need to save my 2000 instance although it would be nice to.
