Upgrade database from SQL Server 2005 Enterprise edition to SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition

  • Hi All,

Can we upgrade database from SQL Server 2005 Enterprise edition to SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition?

    Thanks in advance.

  • You can't. According to microsoft ( http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143393.aspx%5B/URL%5D) if you upgrade enterprise edition, you can ugragde it only to enterprise or Business Intelligence editions.

  • If you're trying to save money on licensing, I don't believe you an upgrade. However you can purchase 2012 Standard and "migrate" to this version.

  • Thanks all for your valuable reply.

Yes, we are planing to go for Standard edition because of Licensing cost.

Can we backup database from SQL Server 2005 Enterprise edition and use same Database on SQL Server 2012 Standard edition?

  • Yes, you can stand up a Standard Edition SQL and migrate your Enterprise database to this instance. However, please make sure to confirm your application or SQL won't require any of the Enterprise only features (online indexing etc...)
