How can you have a SQL 2008 database that is 3 years old? Uhmmmmm, SQL 2008 came out in...well, 2008 and it is only 2010, that is only 2 years.

- Read the according KB ref for the hotfix !!
- Test it on a DBA test server to prepare yourself for the production rollout (timing, expected problems,..)
- Is this a service pack or are you actually talking of a single hotfix ?
(If you have the option, go for the service pack, because we expect that to be better tested)
- As always, play it safe and start with a Full database backup of all databases of your instance ! (including the resource database (sql2005/2008))

And there are off course "cumulative hotfixes" = a set of hotfixes, but not as tested a you would expect for a service pack

Same rules apply to service packs. Service packs will list the hotfixes involved in the SP. Read the kb's - test in dev and then promote through your environments if testing is satisfactory.

I thing Service Pack = Many Hotfixes. Is there any good article that describes as how to apply the service pack or hotfixes?
