Surely if you're keeping the original data and selecting it into a temp table, if the client asked you to recreate the data you'd have major problems. I would go with Jeff's approach and prevent more than 3 answers being selected - It would remove the problem and mean that you don't have any issues recreating your data

The online survey GUI enforces the correct business rules, but they also use paper survey forms and it is these forms that have the extra answers. There are other corrections that need to be made as it seems impossible to stop people adding bad data. The client knows this and is doing there best to get the most out of the data.
Ah... different story, then. Paper is real hard to enforce business rules on unless you're standing there with a bat while the person is filling out the form.
The other key is that the client is aware of the problem... absolute honesty is one of my general rules and has served me and the people I work for very well and that's mostly what my mini-rant on the subject was about.
So, just to be sure, Brian... are you all set now? Do you have a working solution that satisfies the client's business requirements? I haven't double checked it, but Peso usually pulls the correct rabbit out of his hat and I'm assuming that was one of the solutions you've tried.

Yes I have the code I need to meet the business requirements. I'm adding it to the calculation scripts now.
Thanks all. You help and knowledge sharing has been much appreciated.
Cheers, Brian

Ahh all is now clear - I would definately make the point that you may not be able to recreate the data to your client though - Just to cover your back
