The program I referred to: "HandleEx" is available on the http://www.sysinternals.com web site I included in the message ... They apparently have renamed / upgraded it to "Process Explorer" ... but the both programs are available on the site (but not the source code). I'm not affiliated with sysinternals.com, just a happy user of their tools and information.

I have had several unkillable spids, usually they have been with extended stored procedure calls, SQL can kill itself but can't necessarily kill the xp, this is really a bear with xp_sendmail. If another SP causes a procedure with SENDMAIL in it to lock up, it cannot be killed, without shutting services down

I had blocking problems after adding a SQL2000 server.
Do you have both SQL 7 and 2000 on your network ?
MDAC on the clients should be atleast version 2.6SP1. It solved my problems.
