Uninstalling SS 2005 - Unable to Delete sbevent.rll

  • Hello again,

I must say uninstalling/reinstalling SQL Server is a real pain and we have all been there....

This is 2005 on Windows Server 2003. Trying to uninstall SQL Server 2005 and I've reached the point of needing to do some manual cleanup of some left-over files that Add/Remove programs left behind.

When I try to delete the SQL Server folders:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Shared\Resources\1033

I get 'Access Denied' on file sbevent.rll

I think it is related to SQL Server Service Broker.

No SQL Server services are running.

    How can I delete sbevent.rll ?

    Thanks, John

  • I believe when I got that error rebooting the machine took care of it.

  • Thanks Kenneth.

I rebooted a few times (after doing various things) but the sbevent.rll was always locked.

I used this wonderful tool named 'Process Explorer' to find which service/process has the file locked or in-use.

It told me the "wmi.... exe" which is the Windows Management instrumentation service. I stopped the service. Then I was able to delete that file and all the SQL Server folders.

I googled and googled for this problem. I'm one of the lucky few that have encountered this issue, apparently 🙂

ProcessExplorer.exe is now a good friend.

    John
