Uninstallation of CU1 for SQL Server 2005 SP3 is failed

  • I have applied CU1 for SQL Server 2005 SP3 (SQL Server 2005 Developer edition x64). Later, I’m trying to Uninstall from Add/remove programs and it has uninstalled from database engine, Reporting Services and Integration Services BUT it's failing to Uninstall CU1 from SQL Server Tools and Workstation Components 2005 and giving the below error:

Product : SQL Server Tools and Workstation Components 2005

    Product Version (Previous): 4207

    Product Version (Final) :

    Status : Failure

    Log File : C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix\SQLTools9_Hotfix_KB959195_sqlrun_tools.msp.log

    Error Number : 1706

Error Description : MSP Error: 1706 An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Tools (64-bit) cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'SqlRun_Tools.msi'.

    Please advice..

    thanks

Can't comment on error (haven't drilled it much)

I believe if it has got uninstalled from database engine,

Reporting Services and Integration Services it is much Okay.

    It shouldn't affect anything.

  • It is weird.

But if you have a trouble to uninstall CU1 from SQL Server Tools and Workstation Components, you may want to uninstall SQL Server Tools and Workstation Components completely, and then install it back and patch it with SP3.

    Hi,

I have tried this on another brand new server, still I'm getting the same error. Is it a bug??

    Any body tested this?

    please advice..

  • Hi,

I forgot to do the below task before applying CU1. Is the reason for failed Uninstalltion of CU1??

ou must enable the SQL Server Management Object (SMO) extended stored procedures and the SQL Server Distributed Management Object (SQL-DMO) extended stored procedures before you apply the cumulative update package

    Thanks

  • Hi,

    You should check:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix\SQLTools9_Hotfix_KB959195_sqlrun_tools.msp.log

For more information, it seems you have a corrupted or missing file in c:\windows\installer that the package is looking for, check for more info on google, if you need more help post it here.

    Regards,

  • thank you

it seems you have a corrupted or missing file in c:\windows\installer that the package is looking for

I have verified the file "SQLTools9_Hotfix_KB959195_sqlrun_tools.msp.log" and I did not get any clue whether the c:\windows\installer is corrupted or not? how can we prove its corrupted or missing?

    please see the attachment.

after the failure of Uninstall of CU1 for "SQL Server Tools and Workstation Components", I have copied the "sqlrun_tools.msp" from the SQL Software setup files and installed that. After installing sqlrun_tools.msp, I have tried the Uninstall of CU1 and this time its worked.

    please advice..

  • So,

    Yes, I did.

    Yes, I did

    .

So reinstalling the sqlrun_tools.msp is the solution for CU1 uninstall failure?

  • Typically, you solve this by checking in the log the msp file that the installer is looking for and copying the msp file from the latest patch (uncompressing the .exe) to the C:\windows\installer folder with the same name, that the installer is looking, the name you see in the log

This is because when you install or uninstall components SQL checks on the c:\windows\installer folder for the cached files, I have never done what you did, but I'm glad that it worked.

I've had some issues installing Service Packs or cumulative updates and I've solved doing that.

  • I uninstalled Management Studio (2005) because it kept on complaining about trial version finishing. I tried all possible ways of trying to re-install it, but was getting frustrated.

I read the previous thread and I've already tried to run the msi file from the CD and i had errors.

I tried copying the msi file to the local disk and then run it. That did the trick for me.

Also, I had SQL Server 2008 on, I had to uninstall 2008 in order to get this to work otherwise it complained that I had a later version.

    Hope this helps someone
