Understanding Licensing Requirements

Maybe I am out of date, but isn't IIS free?

I think so, with some kind of wrinkle. As I recall, the wrinkle sounds something like "if you're building an app that uses Windows auth, you need licenses for that" otherwise no. So perhaps the answer is - IIS itself is free, but the ability to use windows authentication (under any method) requires appropriate licensing.

  • Microsoft Licensing is ferociously complicated right now. What I would suggest is trying to talk to someone from Microsoft about it Jack. Or else you could see if there is an MSDN Forum on licensing and try there?

  • Barry,

Yeah, the licensing confusion is almost enough to make you go to a LAMP architecture. I was already planning on calling MS since no one seems to really know. Which makes me wonder how many organizations using MS technologies for web sites are legal.

You have to think the MS could make it simpler by just putting out a document that says something like:

"To produce an internet application using IIS with forms authentication and SQL Server the recommended licensing model is: SQL Server per processor and Windows Server 2008 web edition per processor. If you are using Windows authentication you need to also purchase a CAL for each user."

  • The big companies and sites have people who specialize in it. Even Microsoft field offices pretty much throw all of that stuff to resellers and software licensing partners because (IMHO) even they don't understand it.

  • It is a shame they make it so complicated.

I have yet to walk into any organization which is 100% compliant (even those that "try"), just becuase they just can't seem to quite keep up with the dizzying number of options, and in a lot of cases - a lack of a decent way to know centrally where your issues are.
