Unable to open the SSIS Package

  • [font="Tahoma"]

    Hello Friends,

I am just having .dtsx file and i am getting an error message while trying to open the same. This is the error message that i am getting.

Failed to open the package file "package path" due to error 0xC00CE558 "XML document must have a top level element."

Kindly let me know what could be the issue on this.

I would also like to know if we would be able to edit the package without the BIDS.

    Thanks & Regards,

    Murali

  • You can edit the .dtsx file without BIDS, if you have proficient XML skills and don't mind digging through hundreds of lines of XML. 🙂

Apparently the .dtsx file got somehow corrupt and BIDS is complaining about the structure of the XML. So open the .dtsx file in a text editor and also open another package where BIDS doesn't experience any issues. Then look for differences between both files regarding the structure of the XML.

Thanks for your response Koen. Yes, i tried opening the package in notepad as well. As you told, that package seems to be corrupted and its opening a blank page in notepad.

  • Yikes.. How big is the file? I would expect to see SOMETHING in notepad..

Nope. Nothing is there when i open the file in Notepad. I too am surprised about this. However, i do not have BIDS installed in my system. Could it be a reason? I hope not.... My colleague who has BIDS installed in his system is able to open the package.

  • BIDS and notepad are not tied. Are you openning it from the same location? How many bytes is YOUR copy?

Hello Elliot, Seems that the package is corrupted while it was transferred through email. But not sure. It is only 2 bytes.

2 bytes is a little too small for a .dtsx package. Better ask for a resend 🙂

  • Which explains why it won't open and why even notepad won't show its guts..
