Unable to login to SQL2000 database with SQL authentication

  • I have a 2000 server that I want to link to several others, some 2000 and some 2005.

I have set up a new login on the target server, with dbo permissions on several databases, and it has SQL authentication - I have given it a complex password, and the server is set to use mixed mode authentication. I did this using my own login which has sysadmin rights.

When I try to connect to the server as the new user using Enterprise manager, connection is refused with a "login failed" message

If I connect with 2005's SQL Server Management Studio, it lets me connect.

    Any ideas?

  • Hi,

What is the security option you have selected while creating linked servers?

  • I haven't set up the linked server yet - I am so far just trying to create the login, to be used later on to map specific users in the linked server setup

  • If you use both SQL 2000 and 2005 databases, why not use SSMS for all databases? I'm using it too for SQL 2000 (right now working on an upgrade from 2000 to 2008) and it works fine. If something doesn't work (for example the Job Activity Monitor) either use for that Enterprise Manager or any other workaround.
