I'm trying to reinstall SQL Server 2000 on a server where the original instance got corrupted. When I try to reinstall, the installer will go through the entire install process and then will error out with a
"Unable to load sql server driver resource dll. the application cannot continue"
What can I do to clear this up?

I would try to install MDAC 2.6SP2 first and reinstall SQL Server.

try to uninstall SQL Server from your machine ... then install Mdac 2.7 RTM refresh (if you want).. then install SQL Server again ..
note : the best way to remove Sql Server .. is to use the installaion CD of Sql server, and make steps as if you install a new one .. but in a step on add/ remove .. choose to uninstall the curent SQL server instance ...
