During installation of sql 2000 on Win Me Operating system I get the following error after I select the option of installing Database server.
"An internal error has occured on c:\windows\temp.ins. Unable to load insatallation instructions.
Error no. 703"
the above message box occurs after the installshield window appears.
I already have oracle 8 and Personal Web Server installed on my system.
No application is running during this installation process.
I had previously installed the sql2000 server with the same install CD and now it is not installing.
I would greatly appreciate and thank if any body helps me to get this problem resolved.
What could be wrong.

Found a post in the newsgroups that looks like it will help:
Basically indicates that it might be the location of your temp folder.

Dear Andy
Many thanks for your helpful hint that u gave me.
The TEMP and TMP directory pointed to c:\windows\temp .
I copied the setup.ins file from the install cd and renamed it to TEMP.INS
However still it didn't help in installing sql server.
However I read all the setup confuguration files and then I opened the command prompt ( Dos ) window. I nosed around by running different setup and setupsql application files without any success.
Then I went to the standard\x86\setup folder and ran the MSETUP ( demo shield runtime player ) application file and Eureka !!
I was successful in installing the sql 2k server.
However the autoexec.bat file

I got the same error:
"An Internal read Error has occured on C:\DOCUME~1\SQLADMIN\LOCAL.INS. Unable to load Instructions.
Error 703"
I changed the Temp and Tmp environment variable defined under Mycomputer-> right click--> Advanced -->> Environment variables.
There I changed the TEMP and TMP folders name to some other name without any space. Viola! It worked fine then.

Agree with Siva. I had to use the same trick. It looks like MS SQL is not really in favor of "-" anywhere in names or paths. I have had the same issues with database naming where I have to negate all "-" in the names to make certain scripts work.
Anyway, if you have "-" in your login name, you will get Error: 703 during the install as it looks for the path to TEMP and TMP. By default they are in your %USERPROFILE%/Local/.
