When you say "buy the books online", are you refering to a specific book, that you plan to buy from Amazon.com or something like that, or do you mean "Books Online", that comes with SQL Server?
If you mean "Books Online", you don't have to buy that. It comes with SQL Server. If you don't have SQL Server, you can get a copy of Developer Editition for about $50 US. Or, instead of Books Online, you can use http://www.msdn.com, since it has the same information (and more). That's free.

All excellent books. Now, you also said you don't have SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server 2008? You can purchase the Developer Edition of either for $50.00 USD (maybe less if you look around the net a bit). Getting the Developers Edition is definitely worth the expenditure.

What on Earth are you talking about... you said you have an ap with performance problems and that you wanted to write some SQL to fix it. You should already have SQL Server.
I'm starting to think we're being trolled... I'm all done here.

I think you forgot few posts of mine that made you say all that!
"I am in the process of ordering the books online." when I said that I just meant that I am going to buy the books that you have recommened from some online shop and that was in the context that I was unable to get them from any local market here.
I do have an application..for which I have been writing SPs. I do have access to SQL Server for which I dont have documentation or any books. I do need to tune for performance. BUT I told you that we are using SQL Server that our hosting company has provided. After all the discussions in the start, I was referred to few books (by you Jeff!! that I preferred to buy the most) and when I wanted to buy them finally, since I found it a good and only way for me to get started, I was told not to do so because of the documentation/books online that come with SQL Server. SO on this EARTH I got confused!!! because I am really concerned about the cost of the books that I am going to purchase. Also I dont have any credit card here so I will have to ask someone for it.
I applogize that I wasted your time (as you may be thinking) but it was pretty helpful in the start (by you specially) and pretty harsh at the end. I concluded my participation for this time by saying that I will read those books firsts. So will I!
It wasnt really a good way for me to go off the scene like this!

Then I guess we're both fighting a bit of a language barrier problem. 😉
Just to be sure you understand... you don't have to buy the thing called "Books Online"... it comes with SQL Server. My mistake was thinking that you had access to SQL Server based on what you said and I appologize.
It will be difficult, if not impossible to write any code to optimize what you have if you don't actually have any access to the server. Some folks recommended that you buy the Developer's Edition which is identical to the Enterprise Edition in every way except the allowed licensing and the cost... the Developer's Edition only costs $50 US or so. It's like buying your own piano when you want to learn to play... you'll be able to practice the things in any of the books you may use.
Heh... hopefully I'm getting this straight this time. 🙂

Yes you are!!
Just to re-emphasize, I also raised the issue of running SQL Profiler! because of the same issue.
Well in my country we can have cheap SQL Servers!!! all editions! I am a bit scared to share that but I dont need to purchase anything with regards to practicing on SQL Server...!! get it? However I do need to read the stuff so I will buy the books that will help me tune my database.
So now we are back on track...I am going to purchase the BOOKS ONLINE :D...
I already posted the list...
