Turnover conversation with outgoing DBA

  • I do DBA work for the corporate level of my company. I was just notified that the DBA for one of our branch offices is leaving the company. I will be helping to support the branch's SQL Servers until a replacement is found. I'm meeting with the outgoing DBA tomorrow to have a three-hour knowledge transfer before he leaves.

In order to make the best use of our limited meeting time, I'd like to go in having a good idea of the most important information to gather from him. As this point, I have next to no knowledge of the branch's SQL Servers, other than the quantity (twelve of them)

What sort of questions would you ask if you only had three hours ?

Thanks in advance for any input

  • A complete list of servers would be handy.

Make sure you have sysadmin access to all the servers.

A list of the databases on each server, what they are used for, and the key contacts (development, support, users, etc.) for each one.

Make sure all the databases are being backed up and have other key maintenance items like re-indexing, purging, and archiving setup.

Ask if there are any monitoring tools in place, what they are, and make sure you are on the list for alerts.

Ask for a list of the key processes, especially ones that cause trouble.
