TSM

  • I have some Sys. Admin. guys trying to sell me on TSM Backup software.

    Anyone use this ?

  • Whatever it is I would stick to an sql server backup to disk then copy that to tape.

    Cursors never.
DTS - only when needed and never to control.

  • Search these forums. We've had a few discussions on 3rd party backup software. I think the consensus from myself, Brian Knight, Andy, Brian Kelly, Nigel, Chris Kempster, etc. is to use SQL Backup only and grab those flat files to tape.

  • I rejected it from the onset w/o knowing anything on it.

Does anyone know of people using this to do SQL Server backups/restores ?

  • We have started to turn our SQL Backups over to TSM. It started with a large warehouse where we couldn't find enough space to keep the backup for 10 years of history. So far so good. I am skeptical and have asked that I be allowed to keep 1 current backup per production database I support --not the warehouse. They reluctanly gave me the authority. I'm an old timer so sometimes I get my way.

I have had one backup fail under SQL Server as we ran in parallel with TSM. I did dbcc maintenance on the database and then the backup was clean. TSM ran the same evening as though there was no problem so I worry that it may backup a database that could use a little maintenance.

We have a good TSM Administrator and we have many databases at many locations so we are hoping in the long run that this the correct direction. I remain skeptical but don't want to be one of those people that doesn't change with the times.

Practice restores were done with the warehouse while it was under development. Other than that, time will tell if this is the right thing to do once we get an emergency. Karen

  • Yeah, I do sql backups to tape and local files with copies on serveral servers plus I have a replication of our high need database in a different state. If I could get the budget approval I would also dup the tapes and send them to a storage facility rotating once every 5 weeks but haven't got there yet. I was looking at TSM and it sounds great but I don't like not having a check every once in a while and I hate more relying on others when it comes to my job being done even if I got budget approval for anything like it. I just keep good backups, multiple copies, and reevaluate every quarter or so to make sure all my bases are covered and it is done efficiently as possible.

  • I would look at features, that this software supports, which is not supported by SQL Server Backup utility/feature.
