Hi all,
I've just spent the past 2 hours reading through various threads and blogs trying to find out how to install SSMS 2008 on my laptop. The DVD my boss gave me is for SQL Server Enterprise 2008, and he said he had confirmed with our company's software vendor that everything is on the disc. OK, fine - I must be blind.
When I load the dvd, I get a list of links "Planning", "Maintenance", "Tools", etc.; nothing to indicate "Workstation Components", "Client Side Tools", or anything else. When I go through each of the links, there's a lot of stuff for Server-side, and links to help files etc., but nothing that looks like it's what I need.
Soooo I went on line and did some reading and found a blog that said just run SQLRun_Tools.msi. Except I don't have that file on my disc, but I did try running SQL_TOOLS.msi and SQL_SSMS.msi. Both of these start up by saying "Gathering Required Information", and then they just disappear. Nothing in task manager, nothing anywhere.
I have SQL 2000 on my computer now, and I did have 2005; I have completely removed 2005, done 2 reboots, and verified nothing's left. I also have VS2005 and VS2008, but have removed SQL Express from the 2008 installation. I have checked I have .NET 3.5 SP1, and Windows Installer 4.5.
So, what am I missing? I am sure this is really simple, maybe it's because it's a holiday and my brain is taking a vacation.
Thanks in advance
Chris

Copy the content of the DVD to your c drive and run setup in the tools folder that will install all the client tools which includes Management studio.

OK, so i have copied the DVD files to my C:\. Here's what I see:
C:\SQL\ia64, \x64, and \x86. I also have autorun.inf, setup.exe, and a couple of other files.
I go into \x86, and I see:
\1033\, \help\, \redist\, and \Setup\. I also see a whack of other files (DLLs and such).
I go into \Setup\, and I see:
\1033\, \Catalog\, \sql_common_core_loc_msi\ (there's a couple of SQL_Common and SQL_Engine folders), \x64\ and \x86\. I also have a bunch of MSI files, including the sql_ssms.msi and sql_tools.msi I mentioned in my OP.
I do not have a "Tools" folder, nor do I have anything setup.exe anywhere that could be helpful (only ones I have are in the Root, and in the DotNetFrameworks subfolder). Clicking the Setup.EXE in the root obviously takes me to the interface that I have when I put the DVD in.
So, I'm stumped, frustrated and generally annoyed. This was supposed to have been a "quick and easy" thing for me to do on a Holiday Friday, but its now been 4 hours and I've run out of ideas.
Any ideas (short of throwing the DVD out of the window :D) would be appreciated.
Thanks
Chris

Try the tools MSI file that is where the client tools are and the Itanium, X64 and X86 the operating system takes care of the platform.

From the menu you mention above click "Installation" then "New sql server stand alone installation......"
Step through the installer and the shared options\client tools are there on the same page as the database server install options 😉

I don't type that fast so Perry beat me to it...
But to re-iterate:
You should install by running setup.exe (or the initial splash screen you get upon inserting the disc).
Under Installation, Click on "New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation"
When you get to the "Features Selection" only select "Management Tools"
It should then install the tools if you are running a compatible OS and meet pre-reqs.

Setup just loads all the MSI into the installer and under custom option you can choose what components are to be installed pre Windows 7.

...sometimes I wonder how I've earned my "Computer Geek" status at all...:ermm:
Using Perry's suggestion I tried going through the interface. I got to the Installation Rules, and it turns out that my Visual Studio 2008 didn't have SP1 applied. That's totally my bad, I knew SP1 was released and meant to install it, buuuut....
SP1 is installing right now. I don't expect any further issues, but I will certainly post back here if anything else comes up.
Thanks all for your time. Have a great weekend, and if you celebrate Easter, may you have a Happy one!
