I'd like to install SQL server 2005 Express on my PC but keep on getting this error message:
"Name: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (SQLEXPRESS)
Reason: Your upgrade is blocked. For more information about upgrade support, see the "Version and Edition Upgrades" and "Hardware and Software Requirements" topics in SQL Server 2005 Setup Help or SQL Server 2005 Books Online.
Edition check:
Your upgrade is blocked because of edition upgrade rules. For more information about edition upgrades, see the Version and Edition Upgrades topic in SQL Server 2005 Setup Help or SQL Server 2005 Books Online."
I checked the pre-requisites and such and other than Visual Studio 2005, I don't have anything installed on my PC that should cause a conflict.
I followed the instructions on Microsoft's website > http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/express/bb410792.aspx
and uninstalled / reinstalled VS 2005 and the associated microsoft updates and still no luck.
Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

Hi,
Has SQL Server ever been installed on this pc? I would check registry under LocalMachine\Software\Microsoft to be 100% sure.
Thanks,

Thanks for the suggestion 🙂
Yep, the PC already had SQL server 2005 Express installed but it was the advanced version.
It has been uninstalled thru the control panel but I checked the registry as you suggested.
I can see some key for SQL server express but nothing to remove the program in my control panel.
I'm a novice for SQL server and so I just don't feel comfy to remove any keys from the registry.
Could you help me a little bit more with this one please?
Thanks for your help!

Hi,
No worries at all, glad I could help!
Here are a couple of documents covering both SQL Server 200 and SQL Server 2005, which will help you tidy-up. Once done, you should be ok with installation.

I removed everything, including Visual Studio and related products... and the SQL server express install worked!
Thanks again for your help and have a good one!
