Hi,
My day job is doing network administration for a multitude of small businesses... I used to be in a job position where I got to do more database work.. a little of the dba side along with some small dev work. Right now however, I'm not in that position and I find myself wanting to do that full time. I've tried self learning, readying books, udemy, etc - but I've never really been in a position to have a mentor or be tasked with real database work in a long time.
I don't want to screw up anyone's production database - but without finding myself in a lucky job position.. how does one gain real experience? I'd even be willing to work a few hours per week for free - is there a program or opportunity that anyone has heard of that would be able to provide that?
I can read and study video until the cows come home but that's just not the same as being faced with real situations.
Thanks,
Jason

You can get SQL Server Developer Edition for free by signing up at the Visual Stuido Dev Esentials website. Info is here:
https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/dataplatforminsider/2016/03/31/microsoft-sql-server-developer-edition-is-now-free/
Dev Esentials site which is also free is here:

The Developer Edition has all the features of Enterprise Edition, so you can install it on your own machine and practice as much as you like. To get some close to real world experience, you can get AdventureWorks or World Wide Importers sample databases here:

For a larger dataset, Brent Ozar recommends using the Stack Overflow data dump:

Thanks Chris... I'll take a look at the larger dataset - that's awesome.
