Trying to find Sci-Fi short story from long ago

  • A long time ago (probably over 40 years ago), I read a sci-fi short story about a time when people were always "connected". One man decided that he wanted to be "unplugged". He loved the silence. His wife was very upset when she couldn't contact him immediately. He ended up being examined by psychiatrists.

I may not quite have the details correct. Does anyone remember this story? Can you tell me the author or title?

  • I asked on Twitter and got this one: http://www.amazon.com/Dayworld-Trilogy-Philip-Jose-Farmer/dp/0399129677

Doesn't ring a bell with me.

  • "Dayworld" was fun but I don't think it's what you're looking for. It's about a society that's over populated, to take care of the over population half the people were put into stasis during the day, the other half during the night (IIRC, been a long time since I read it).

  • I'm fairly certain it was a short story written before the days of cell phones and the internet. So I don't think that's it. It may have been in a shorty story collection with Asimov's "A Feeling of Power".

  • This may help, I believe there was an episode of Ray Bradbury Theater which was quite similar to this story description, perhaps it was an adaptation, which would give you a place to start looking.

  • Hi Julie, the story's familiar but I may just be recalling a recent movie (can't remember the name, but it had Bruce Willis in it). Having said that it sounds very much like something Philip K. Dick would have written...

  • I found a couple Ray Bradbury stories that looks promising: "And then the Silence" and "The Murder". They may be essentially the same story; I understand many of his stories were edited and renamed. Thanks for all the suggestions! Now on to more research.

  • Thanks for the repost. I'll check those out.

  • The outline rings a bell, but no clear recollection of where I came across it or who wrote it. The theme sounds more like Rober Sheckley than Philip Farmer, though.

  • "The Murderer" is a short story in "The Golden Apples of the Sun" by Ray Bradbury. I think this is the story I was trying to recall. What's amazing it that is was written prior to 1960! Thanks for all the helpful suggestions everyone! I appreciate it!!

  • Looks like I'll have to go read it now!
