transfer logins

  • i need to transfer only the sql logins from one server to another server with the passwords as well, how can we do it ?

  • You can do this via TSQL or download the Idera SQL Permissions Extractor (makes it a lot easier)

You can get a decent TSQL script here:

    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5983676/t-sql-copy-logins-users-roles-permissions-etc

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918992

  • Here's a script that's been floating around for a very long time that will help you out,

--CREATE THE STORED PROCS TO GENERATE THE LOGINS--

    USE master

    GO

IF OBJECT_ID ('sp_hexadecimal') IS NOT NULL

    DROP PROCEDURE sp_hexadecimal

    GO

    SELECT @i = 1

    SELECT @length = DATALENGTH (@binvalue)

    DECLARE @firstint int

    DECLARE @secondint int

    SELECT @tempint = CONVERT(int, SUBSTRING(@binvalue,@i,1))

Then just execute that SP and you're good.

  • Yes, that is a greate SP.

One additional question though... in SQL2008 how does one script out above the database level rights (Server ROles)... like... SA, dbcreator, bulkadmin, etc

That is the one i cannot figure out easily.

  • 2005 and/or 2008

  • Did you try the free software I recommended? It's does what you are asking...

  • I also recommend the free tool, but if for some reason you cannot, this link from SQL Soldier is worth looking at.

  • I have a handy script for this. Will post tomorrow
