Hello all,
Some questions regarding transactional replication ...
1. Is an initial snapshot required? Can I just restore a backup of the publisher db on the subscriber and then begin trasactional replication?
2. Is the weekly snapshot required? Does it wipe and reload Article tables?
As always thanks for any help!

HI,
With transactional replication, the initial snapshot is always the safer bet as you are following the standard practice. And it does ensure all objects and data are properly syncd. You can restore the publisher and do a nosynch setup with the subscriber but you should make sure that all the replication procedures are on the subscriber.
A snapshot is usually only applied at the beginning of transactional replication - to initially snchronize. After that you should only be applying changes (transactions). I don't think you should be applying a weekly snapshot with Trans rep. After the snaphot agent has run for the first time, I usually remive the schedule from the agent job, that way i know if it needs to run again, I must run it.
The application of a new snapshot will replace all articles and data (depending on your snapshot settings - typically it is set to drop and recreate)

Thanks! Your answers are very helpful.
If I understand correctly a snapshot schedule is for the case when new subscribers are coming online frequently. They can get started with a fresh snapshot of the publication. If you don't anticipate new subscribers you don't need to schedule snapshots (I found this out after posting my questions).
Thanks again.
