Transaction logs and recovery models

  • So, i've been looking at my trans log versus my backup and the t-logs are HUGE almost as large as the backups.  I have been playing with the different recovery models but at this point i just want to know if t-logs are really even worth it at this point?

    thoughts? opinions? solutions possibly?

    thanks

  • Could you give some specifics of your situation, such as your DB & T-Log backup scripts,  recovery model and how "important" your DB is.

Are transaction logs "worth it"  ?  It depends.  Some databases are critical to the business and need to be recoverable to a specific point in time. For example, there's data corruption or a catastrophe at 2:17 pm. You'll need the t-logs and the last full backup to restore the database to 2:16 pm. Other DBs are non- critical and restoring to the last full backup is good enough.

If you look through recent postings in the BACKUP section (probably others too), you'll see more on this topic since it comes up pretty frequently.

BOL (Books On Line) has a lot of info worth reading. check out RECOVERY model
