Trans Log backup much larger than Original Trans log

  • We made the decision to run it in Simple mode, but I had left it in Bulk-logging while I tried to find a pattern.   I knew that there were some other things that may need to be pulled into a Trans log backup when the DB is in Bulk logging, but I would have never expected it to cause it to be larger than the database itself.  But I guess the large DB and running the reorg job in bulk logging were the root of my problem.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this long running post, especially dcpeterson and hoo-t.  I appreciate you guys taking time to help me with this.

    Thanks,

  • No problem!  I'm glad you got it resolved!  It was quite a challenge, huh?

  • Yes it was, I would have never expected that in Bulk Logging the Trans log backup could have exceeded the size of the Database, but I guess it can.  If they are willing to read 4 pages of posts, hopefully this will help someone in the future.  I know I could not find a solution anywhere from just searching online.

    Thanks again,

  • I think 4 pages must be some kind of record.  I think it should qualify you (us???) for special consideration in the new contest!  If I hadn't seen that article in SQL mag, I never would have considered it either!  It just didn't make since that a tlog backup could be many times larger than the tlog!

  • Yeah, Steve that was a good catch!  It's one of those things that I remember knowing, but just never put two and two together.
