Tracking SQL Server licenses within the Enterprise

  • How to do you keep track of licenses in the enterprise, kind of like a license inventory?

This is something I struggle to figure out, as different people are buying it through different vendors...

  • Keep a database of it. Do inventory every now and again.

A table with which computer it's on, what license level it is, and the activation code, plus the usual other stuff (date active, who registered, etc.), should do it for you.

  • Better yet, give this to the accountants. Let them track purchases, you send them an update of when you have a new server and how it's configured.
