I have seen a few requests for a T-SQL explanation of how to write a query that gets the top xx of each group for a data set.
So image I had this type of data. Results from a race
Runner Time Age
1 10 20
2 15 20
3 11 20
4 12 30
5 18 30
6 9 40
7 16 40
8 13 30
Show how to get the top 2 for each age group in one query.

Here's part 1 of a blog series I started and never continued. Still have plans to do it some day 😀
(edit): Sorry, I was confused and thought Dave's signature was a link to his blog post on the topic. I guess I misunderstood the purpose of this forum; I'll leave this here in case Dave is interested -- did not intend to step on his efforts.

Sorry I am reasonably new to the forums. I saw the link http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Contributions/Edit/71571 and I couldnt access it.
However the link you just posted works great, thanks.
