tools to check the database design (normalization)

  • Hi: Gurus, is there any tool available in the market that can do some assement about the data based schema. I am more interested in the data base design and model assement (how normalized the shcmea is etc etc) than performance.

    Thanks,

    Rashid.

  • Hello,

I have not heard of any similar tool and I cannot really see that an efficient one can exist. Since the data in the tables can be interpreted in so many ways it is next to impossible to have the normalization 'factor' derived from it.

Unless you could manually specify all relations, all data domains, all implications of your data (with respect to your business rules) and every thing else that goes into doing a complete data modeling analysis...

Probably the only solution is that you yourself evaluate your database to determine how 'normalized' it is...

  • Thanks Hanslindgren for the reply; and yes I agree interpreting rules for the normalization would be bit hard and quite subjective, and finding a tool that can analyze normalization rules 100% acuratley would be hard to imagine, but I guess it is not impossible to have some thing that can give you a rough idea about how normalized your database model is. Again it is hard that is why I am looking for a vendor, but it is amazing can't find one; I think may be there is not enough justification monetarily for tools like that.

  • Hello Rashidjilani,

Albeit I still think it might be impossible to find a tool that gives you value for your money or for the time you have to spend configuring it and telling it real life relationships, I think it is a very interesting idea. If there is any tool like that out there I would be interested. Please tell me if you find any!
