The issue with many of the counters is that they are server wide, there isn't the granularity, this is something I've raised with Microsoft as I too have suffered from fools thinking perfmon counters indicate something they don't. Therefore there is no way you can point scans at a prticular database unless you're willing to run a profiler trace and then analyse the results.
Part of the issue is the actual monitoring tools that have to set thresholds to justify their existence, my brief brushes with them have indicated the more expensive the tool the worse it is ( i.e. useless ) No doubt these consultants were very expensive too .. I wish to god I could get the day rate some of these "consultants" get!! I could post some wonderous tales !!!

I'm sure you can provide quite a few exemples of useless tools or consultants without knowing or getting there rates... How about you send us a few?

what - send you the consultants? gladly.
A consultant ( £1000 per day + ) configured a major application which rolls out patches across enterprises ( like SMS used to ) , sql server and databases, set it up to use sa with a blank password in a production environment ( in a bank ) the servcie accounts on the server were also domain admins. I was instructed to add a password, which broke the app, we had to get another consultant ( for two days ) to fix it.

What's that in US dollars?
I'm not sure of the conversion but it seems like a salary I would enjoy .

about $1,900 per day on the current exchange rate .. my aim is to make that daily rate, can't tell you how far I'm off that currently < grin >

Well I'm only 1600 $ short on my end. I could settle for 1000 US / day for the moment .

Hmm no idea how to compare rates, I'd always assumed rates were higher out of the UK, still I have no idea of living costs so tricky one.

Current salary : 1800$ / week (40 Hours)
Current living expenses 2500$ - 3000$ / month

Hmmm .. that's at the top end of what a permanent DBA might get in the UK, I work as a contractor so my earnings are all based upon different calculations. ( although there's lots of different scales of DBA's ) I'd put my outgoings at about double yours. Don't suppose this is helping the index scans though? , other than I expect who ever thought up the figures was grossly overpaid and probably near to our ideal rates < grin >

I'm working as a freelancer as well. So I would assume I would be at the low end of the scale on that point (only 45 can $/ hour). But I can't complain too much about my freedom at this point .
Can you expand a bit on those calculations that define your salary?
